Basement Flooring Flooded

A great solution for upgrading your floors after a flood.

Inevitably there will be at least one storm per year that produces flooding. It’s not uncommon for us to get a “flood” of phone calls (sorry, I had to do it) looking into staining their basement or garage after the flooding has required them to rip out all of their carpet.

And we totally get it! Stained and sealed floors are a great way to upgrade your basement floors and it’s often way cheaper to install stained concrete instead of carpet.

COST:

Stained concrete flooring can range between $2-$4 a square foot with outliers on the lower and higher end depending on the project. Carpet can range in the $2-$10 a square foot.

CARE:

Carpet can feel nice and cushy on your bare feet, but it’s also great at trapping dirt, hair, and everything else. Vacuums can only pick up so much - so after time smells, dirt, and grime get trapped deep into the fibers and or padding of the carpet. Heaven forbid you get another flood and you’re installing another round of carpet AGAIN! Conversely, a stained floor makes it easy to get a broom or dry mop and properly clean the floor. There isn’t any sneaky grime or dust that can hide when your floor is so smooth.

COLORS:

Color options are endless and there are a variety of styles to choose from. My personal preference is to use some sort of faux finish for a basement floor vs a solid color. A solid color outdoors can look great and natural, but indoors it can take on the feel of a medical office. A faux finish can also add some contrast to walls that are often a flat color.

ISN’T CONCRETE COLD?:

Basements are often colder than the rest of the house and the flooring can be cool. However, add in a complimentary rug and you’re good to go. The rug won’t cover all of your new awesome floor, just an area or two where the foot traffic is highest. For example, have some rug right where your feet would hit the ground if you have a couch there. Basements aren’t usually places where you are walking around a lot; you typically are walking to the place where you are sitting - so place a rug in those areas if a cold floor is a possible concern.
