Choosing Concrete Colors 101
Decorative Concrete is only limited by your imagination. So, how does a homeowner who may have little to no artistic ability choose the right color? Here are a few helpful suggestions to get you the best-looking floor or driveway to compliment your home.
What’s in a color?
First! You must erase the way we looked at color from our grade school years. When you picked up a crayon, brown looked like brown and yellow was yellow. This is what I call the “Crayola” mindset. Take a look at these 6 color chips.
They are all brown but they are different. So we have to think about what KIND of brown you want (if choosing brown).
The first brown has a little yellow and a hint of red/pink.
The second brown has some gray,
The third some violet, fourth some red/yellow,
The fifth some orange or ‘rust’,
The last chip has some gray and a little yellow as well often referred to as “Umber”.
The ‘undertones’ of a color are what we want to pay attention to when trying to create ‘balance’ within a room.
For example, let’s say you have a white wall that has a touch of gray in the white paint, chip 5 with it’s orange undertones, may not be the best choice whereas chip 2 could be a better starting point because they have some gray that could compliment the gray undertone of the white paint. There are countless options, but hopefully, this helps reveal how a subtle detail can make a bigger impact than choosing just any color.
